What can you expect?
With HuskyHIKING, you go on tour with your "own" husky. With a special hip belt and a shock-absorbing pull cord, you are connected to the husky and form a joint human-dog trekking team. The hip belt makes it easier for you to hold the dog and you have your hands free.
The Husky's pulling power provides you with good support when walking and gives you a good push. But if you think this is going to be a leisurely walk, you are sadly mistaken. Huskies have a brisk gait and you can expect a slightly faster pace. But don't worry, you've "only" got one Husky in front of you that you can slow down from time to time.
During the first few kilometers, you can get to know each other until you've settled in as a trekking team.
What is the program schedule?
Getting to know the dogs
First, you will get to know some of the dogs from the pack that are suitable for the hike. Our dogs are very people-oriented, curious and love to be stroked.
Instruction and putting on the equipment
After you have met the dogs and the dogs have met you, we will put on the hip belt together and, if you wish, you can put the harness on the dog you are going on the hike with.
General instructions and rules of conduct
Since this will not be a "normal" dog walk, but you will be dealing with very well-trained and strong sled dogs, there will be a short briefing and a few rules of conduct so that you know what to look out for when dealing with a dog.
We are going on a hiking tour
Now the dogs can hardly wait and we set off. At the start, you will feel the power of the dogs impressively on your own body and you will have to put up a good fight. But don't worry. After a few hundred meters, the dogs will calm down and adapt to your pace. You will notice how you and your dog become more and more of a team, which is great fun.
Mario will also be happy to tell you lots of interesting facts about the sled dogs and you can ask him all the questions you've always wanted to know about sled dogs.
Little picnic
At the halfway point, we take a short break for a small picnic, eat and drink a little something and simply enjoy nature and the company of the dogs.
Snacks and cuddles for the dogs
After the tour, you can reward the dogs with snacks, pet them extensively and take as many souvenir photos as you like
What requirements do I need to meet?
Minimum age for participation: 7 years
The hikes also offer children the opportunity to experience huskies up close. Children should be at least 7 years old or be able to walk 6 km.
Minimum age to walk a dog alone: 12 years
In order to be allowed to walk a dog alone, children must be at least 12 years old and physically able to hold a dog. Whether a child is allowed to walk a dog alone is decided on site.
As a rule, we always find a solution so that children are allowed to walk a dog on their own at least some of the time. Children who are not yet physically able to walk a dog on their own walk a dog together with an adult, i.e. the child and an adult are each connected to the dog with a lead.
Physical requirements
You don't have to be an athlete for the tours, but you should be able to walk 3 to 7 km. As huskies are pulling dogs and can pull very hard, you should be physically able to lead a dog. If you have back, knee or other health problems, we advise against leading a dog. If you can't or don't want to lead a dog, you can still take part in a hike.
No fear of the dogs
You will come into direct contact with our sled dogs, who may even jump on you.
What clothing is needed?
Wear appropriate clothing for the weather
You should wear clothes that are easy to hike in. In fall and winter, you should dress according to the onion principle, i.e. several thin layers instead of one thick one. And remember, we are on the move and it can quickly get warm in a jacket that is too thick. That's why several thin layers are more advantageous, as you can put them on or take them off as required.
For footwear, we recommend good hiking or trekking boots that are lined and have a good tread. The same applies here: wear shoes that you can comfortably walk several kilometers in.
We recommend taking a rucksack with you in which you can carry drinks, food and everything you need.
We recommend the following clothing:
Lined hiking pants
Lined hiking boots
Warm hat
Thick winter gloves or mittens
A warm winter jacket
A thin woolen buff or face shield
Backpack
Wool instead of cotton
Cotton should not be used for socks and thermal underwear, as it does not protect against the Arctic cold as well and you will freeze much faster in it.
